A button on every past message in the history that forks from that specific point would be ideal - that way there’s maximum flexibility to back.

Yes, came here to ask for this. Venice wrote in a newsletter “If you wish to keep the initial conversation as-is and direct part of the conversation in a new direction, we recommend sharing an encrypted link of the conversation with yourself, and then modifying the shared conversation.”
But, this does not work if you open the link in the same browser. The decrypted content seems to resolve to the existing chat instead of creating a separate conversation.
