Deleting an image from Feeds after only five downvotes is an excessively low threshold and undermines the platform’s stated commitment to freedom of speech and expression. Five users do not represent a meaningful consensus, especially on a platform with a large and diverse user base.
Downvotes should help users personalize what they see, not function as a rapid censorship mechanism that lets a small group suppress lawful, nonviolent, or merely unpopular expression. This system is particularly vulnerable to coordinated reporting, ideological brigading, and users who downvote material simply because it challenges their preferences or beliefs.
Venice should reserve removal for clear violations of published rules, such as illegal content, credible threats, doxxing, nonconsensual intimate material, fraud, or other explicitly prohibited categories. For everything else, use ranking controls: reduce distribution, add user filters, or let individuals mute creators and topics.
At minimum, raise the removal threshold substantially, require a meaningful ratio of negative feedback to total views or votes, account for suspicious coordinated voting, and provide creators with a notice and appeal option.
